The sound quality of the string musical instrumets with have wooden resonance case (body) is given not only by the performance of the musician and the quality of the strings, but by the whole construction of the instrument bulit by many parts. Besides the quality of the wood used, it depends on the shape, thickness, manufacturing a lacquering of the instrument.

The exceptionality of concert instruments produced in Akord Kvint’s workshop is given mainly by the credentials of the master luthiers, the quality of wood and surface finish. All the student and concert violins, violas and cellos are built by luthiers and master luthiers.

This team manages all the above mentioned proceedings on the top level. The instruments are then, thanks to the dealers Akord Kvint company has all over the world, really popular and can be reach at a reasonable price by talented students and professionals as well as by those, who take playing a musical instrument as a hobby.

The production model in our workshop makes it possible to safely and efficiently pass on knowledge and experience from generation to generation, thus preserving the local tradition of making stringed musical instruments. We are proud that we managed to profile the fourth generation of luthiers - masters in their field. Through the group around Josef Holpuch, followed by the group of violinmakers around Karel Poplštein, to the team around Jan Lorenz and Jan Fronk, up to Luboš Deraha and Pavel Mosbauer.

Qualification

All staff in our company are skilled luthiers, part of which gradually reached the degree of master luthiers. They obtained this qualification in the violin school in Luby, where they were led by i.e. Miroslav Pikart and Karel Zadrazil. They graduated in master courses under the leadership of Alois Sibal, Josef Dvorak, Emil Lupac and many others. They got extra „classes“ from such practitians as Josef Holpuch, Jan Lorenz, Jan Fronk and Karel Poplstein. Akord Kvint for example cooperated closely with the pedagogues of the Prague Conservatory – Jaroslav Foltyn, Jaroslav Ruis, Frantisek Pisinger and Pavel Kudelasek who made tests of concert and master instruments. Our company cooperates with prestigeous pedagogues of music schools such as Ladislav Michal, Martin Slavik, Jaroslava Stankova, Miroslav Pikhart and many others. Our luthiers also take part in special seminars which are run for them by our company. Recently, Michael van Berkum, Eduard Schwen and Miroslav Petras, Nicolas Despiau or product specialists of Thomastik Infeld company, excellent players Attila Pasztor and Stojan Jovanovic have passed their own experience onto them. Last but not least, we have a very good long-lasting relationship with the master luthier Josef Poetzl.

Quality of wood

Construction of instruments uses the Alpine spruce and the highest quality Bosnian maple. It is obtained from lumber-mills in Germany. The plates, necks and ribs from these sources undergo appropriate treatment right after the wood is chopped down, they are cut or splintered, perfectly stored and long dried in a natural way.

Surface treatment

Violinmakers worry about lacquering the instruments, since it often impairs the sound of the white instrument. Managing perfect surface treatment, beautiful color and gloss requires rich knowledge and experiences. At the same time, it is a very time-consuming and elaborate matter. The Akord Kvint master violinmakers abound in extraordinary knowledge of the surface treatment of string instruments. The lacquers are prepared according to old, well-established recipes. The lacquering technology itself is then a key to the success of the whole process.

Award

In 2014 and 2019, instruments from the Akord Kvint workshop won awards at the Soul and Shape international violin makers competition in Moscow. Model No. 40 won the gold medal in the violin category. Model No. 30 Jan Lorenz won the second prize in the same category. In the viola category model No. 1/70 received first place.
